Reality TV is exact proof that you never know what is truly going on in somebody's life. What even makes it “real”? I can tell you that the staged arguments and the fake relationship pairings definitely do not.
Imagine if our college dating life was like Love Island. After the first few days of school, already feeling betrayed or overlooked by your fellow islanders (classmates), in a new villa (campus)- it would be exhausting. This proves itself that what we watch daily for enjoyment are real people's feelings, in fake, fabricated scenarios. We came to school to pursue a career, meet new people, and live away from the comfort of your home for the first time, the same way these people wanted to join a show to find love. But, instead are left with hate comments, edits and false narratives.
All of the reality TV stars we know and love face battles every single day that we rarely even see on the screen. All of our friends and acquaintances face battles every single day that we never see behind our phone screen.
The happiest and most picture perfect couples we see on reality TV are not always as perfect as we may think. Brooks Nader (Love Thy Nader) and Gleb Savchenko (Dancing With the Stars) seemed so in love, but really he was cheating the whole time. We always see the best parts of these people and easily compare our looks, personalities and relationships.
It is always a good idea to check up on our friends around us. The same reality TV stars show us the good parts of their lives or the versions of themselves they and their producers want us to see, and our loved ones can do the same. When I am down or upset, I am not always quick to tell a friend I am feeling this way, because I want them to think of me as a complete ray of sunshine. People like this are sometimes those who need to be checked on the most.
It's important to face reality. It's important to be real.
