Falling In Love With a Busy Schedule

As the fall semester begins its end, we can’t help but long for the home-cooked meals and childhood rooms that await us, symbolizing a period of hard-earned rest. For the past three months we’ve adapted to exciting yet all-consuming routines, day in and day out, hoping our hard work will pay off upon receiving our final grades.

Spending time away from the academic and social chaos of college should feel like a release of the energy that we’ve been consistently pouring into every aspect of our lives. But while we can, and should, release this energy, it’s important to remember not to let it slip away. We’ve grown so accustomed to a cycle of making to-do lists and checking off boxes that it begs the question: What do we do when our to-do lists are complete?

The truth is, that in college, even when you think you’ve finished everything on your list, there’s always another project to be taken on or a way to get ahead on next week’s work. However, when we spend extended periods of time at home, life can often feel meaningless and bleak without our carefully curated schedules to cling to.

This is why it’s crucial to create healthy habits and hobbies that keep not only your schedule full but your heart happy. Check out the memberships at your hometown gym or stay warm this winter by learning how to crochet; the possibilities are truly endless.

Whatever way you choose to spend your time when you aren’t at school, make sure you are filling your schedule while also filling your cup.

I know I’m not only speaking for myself when I stress how hard it is to navigate my life when I’m not at school surrounded by endless distractions and noise. The absence of college life can bring quite an uncomfortable silence, but only if you let it. Allow that silence to become a sense of peace and an understanding of who you truly are.

So rather than spending these upcoming breaks anxiously awaiting the beginning of next semester, take this time to ground yourself in the present moment, truly get to know yourself better, and fill each day with little things that make you happy.
