Out-of-State Adjustment

At the end of a long day the only thing I want is my own bed, my dog and my mother’s home-cooked meal. But what’s the solution when you, like myself, are 800 miles away from that bed, those animals and that meal? This feeling is something we were never taught, just something we were expected to learn. There was no guide to leaving home and agreeing to create a life for yourself; not even summer camp can prepare you for a change such as this.
Even as a junior there are days, I lay awake wishing my mom were in the same realm just hoping to see her in my peripheral, knowing she’s watching over me. But instead, she lives a parallel life a couple hundred miles away. Who prepares you for that?
But, as the days and years go on, that void is slowly filled with the small things you love. Movie nights, walks around campus, eating your favorite comfort meal. You find home within these new surroundings, making this place seem small.
Out-of-state is a label you’ve been branded with once someone realizes you aren’t from the same state, but it’s much more than that. Being out-of-state is a struggle at times but rewarding in return. Something not many are capable of.
So, in return if you find yourself lost in the unknown states, miles and hours away, just know you are not alone, and that out-of-state is seen as your superpower.
