As we know, college can be overwhelming. Between exams, internships, social pressure, and trying to figure out what you want to do with your future, it is easy to get caught up in your own stress. Everyone and everything is moving fast, and sometimes it feels like you barely have time to catch your breath. But we often forget how much our attitude and energy can affect the people around us; even the smallest moments of positivity can make a bigger difference than we realize!
One way to instill joy in others is through simple everyday interactions. It does not have to be anything huge or dramatic. Just simply sending a quick text to check in on a friend, inviting someone to get coffee before class, or telling someone they did a great job on a presentation, these simple actions can mean a lot. Key word simple. These small actions show others that they are seen and valued. On a college campus where many people feel pressure to constantly perform or compete, a moment of kindness can break through that stress and remind someone that they matter beyond their grades or achievements.
Being present and supportive in the lives of the people around you is crucial. A lot of students silently deal with homesickness, anxiety, or feeling like they do not belong. When you laugh with people, celebrate their wins, or simply listen to their rough day, it creates a sense of connection. Joy does not always mean being loud or energetic. Sometimes it is just being someone who brings calm, encouragement and understanding into a space.
Joy is contagious. When one person chooses to bring positive energy into a group, it often spreads unconsciously. A supportive comment in a group chat, cheering someone on during a tough week, or just sharing a genuine moment of laughter can shift the mood of an entire room. College is not only about building a resume or getting through assignments; college is also about building relationships and memories with the people around you.
At the end of the day, instilling your joy in others does not mean you have to be happy all the time. Everyone has tough days, and that is completely normal. But when you can share your positivity, encouragement, or even just a moment of laughter, you create a ripple effect that reaches farther than you think. Sometimes the best thing you can do for someone’s mental health is simply remind them that there is still good in the day.
